If you are a MacBook user, you’ve noticed Apple’s shift towards laptop minimalism firsthand. Apple started to release the original MacBook Air, which doesn’t have CD drive. You get a MacBook air or MacBook pro docking station which can help you to use your single USB-Cs into a variety of other essential ports.

What is a docking station?

A docking station is an interface which allows portable computers with little or no effort to attach to other devices. When you are at home or office, docking station allows you to make your devices portable. Docking station allows the laptop to be connected directly to the docking station, without any external cables being required. They are different docking stations from others.

There are three things which are important for MacBook. For a MacBook user it’s important to understand the difference between those things.

1. MacBook Pro Docking Stations:

MacBook Pro Docking Stations are used for multi-display which also supports charging function that’s why they use Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB-C.  These stations provide fast data transfer and 4k to 5k display support. They can charge your laptop and mobile devices because they have their own power supply. They provide your desktop workflow more versatility and convenience as they are meant to be stationary. The best MacBook Pro docks provide the port capacity to your laptop. It also provides power your mac, a few high-resolution displays, and other devices. These mac dock stations are not portable. A docking station is always available on your desk, whether your laptop is present or not. It provides you photo output outstanding and enhance your audio quality

2. Mac Hubs:

MacBook hubs are almost similar to mac docking stations. Because of similarity, it might be confusing. They have one-to-many USB-port conversions and don’t require a power source. They don’t need their own plug that’s why they are lighter and smaller and due to this they are more portable.

3. Mac Adapters:

If you are looking for port versatility then adapters are the best peripherals for you. USB-C adapters are very compact and affordable of the pack but it can be used only for single purpose which means adapters can convert one USB-C port into one USB-A or HDMI. They are less expensive and you can go with a simple single-port adapter for which you don’t need 4k to 5k display support and high-speed data transfer. So overall, If you are a kind of person who like to keep yourself busy with external monitors and other devices, a USB C docking station is the best thing for you.

If you are MacBook pro user then a dock is the most important accessory to have. Apple’s latest version of MacBook pro is quite impressive but it has some drawbacks as well. It’s faster and slimmer than previous generations but it consists only one type of port that is Thunderbolt 3.

I’ve checked out the current Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market but there are couple of things about thunderbolt 3 docks that I need to tell you.

  1. The first thing is when you connect things with a dock your macbook shows an extra step in the chain that can create trouble to you. For instance, you have to think about the connection of an external hard drive to your dock and dock’s connection to your computer.
  2. If something went wrong with the dock, it can affect both what’s attached with the dock and your MacBook. You also need to use surge protector with it.
  3. However, thunderbolt 3 is new standard but it still has some issues. Whenever you connect docks to your MacBook, you should use a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Thunderbolt 3 also uses the same physical connector as USB-C. Thunderbolt 3 is different from USB-C on the basis of bandwidth. These docks are expensive.
