Untitled 139916 (Half Moon Bay, California), 2013, Archival pigment print, 12x12 or 24x24”, (retail $1-4,000)
A couple of weeks ago, I was working late, preparing to leave town, and heard and then saw a car pull in my driveway. I live up a long country driveway, cars rarely pull in, especially at 9 PM. Partly, I’m curious. Partly, I have 9-1 entered on my phone.
I hear a knock, and there is a young fellow on my doorstep. He introduces himself and I stare at him blankly. Then he says he has an airbnb reservation for the next three days. I correct him. No, it’s for next Thursday.
We both take out our phones to check, and sure enough, I screwed up. I saw the reservation come in that morning, but assumed it was for next Thursday, while I was gone. I don’t rent my house while I’m in it.
I talk a bunch about trust in this project. Mostly I talk about blind faith and humanity while traveling. I haven’t had to make a split second decision about trust - in my own house. I tell him that he is welcome to stay as long as he doesn’t mind that I’m also here, working until I leave on Saturday morning. He agrees that it's better than a sleeping bag on the floor of his new office.
So, I offered him a glass of bourbon. And next thing you know, we’re chatting at the kitchen table, becoming friends.
I'm giving this image away for FREE. Yes, that's right free. What's the catch? I ask that you make a donation to the project. Those of you with a little more cash to spare, I hope you'll donate generously. Those of you with little or no cash to spare, I completely understand, it's your lucky week!
